Join Perth Festival of the Arts for a glorious evening of classical hits with one of the top orchestras in the Asia-Pacific region, the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra.
Travelling nearly 7000 miles to get to Perth, the orchestra clearly means business, bringing with it a programme that packs a world of thrilling music into two hours.
Acclaimed Polish Conductor Grzegorz Nowak is joined by leading Filipino violinist Diomedes Saraza Jr. for Vaughan Williams’ Classic FM chart-topping, The Lark Ascending. This soaring vision of English pastoral forms a fascinating contrast to the elegant gestures of Tchaikovsky’s nostalgic Rococo Variations, the composer’s homage to his hero, Mozart. Its gracefulness belies its stern technical challenges for the soloist so we’re delighted to welcome Chinese cellist Wen-Sinn Yang, a true musical adventurer who’s at ease in a vast range of repertoire.
Putting the drama into the programme are two enduringly popular scores for the stage. Bizet’s colourful Carmen Suite is chock-full of the opera’s biggest tunes, from the heroine’s seductive habanera to the chest-puffing bravado of the toreador. Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake is the last word on Romantic musical tearjerkers, its magical tale of doomed love showcasing his mastery of emotive melodies.
A celebratory new commission and a roof-raising symphony complete the programme. Filipino composer Jeffery Ching’s Il maestro di capella opens the concert with a witty take on the rituals of the concert hall, whilst Beethoven’s fiery 5th Symphony ensures a compelling conclusion. Robust and punchy by turns it never lets go its grip, from the fateful opening four notes to the joyful high spirits of the finale.
