Review of VOCES8

Perth Festival has a tradition that should always be maintained, that is to have a top-class vocal, a capellla ensemble on their programme. Tallis Scholars, The Sixteen and Tenebrae have all thrilled us with their choral excellence – it was the turn this year for Voces8 to carry from where they left off. And they did so is sensational style.
Due to circumstances beyond their control, the programme was altered, meaning we couldn’t hear Lucy Walker’s Give Me Your Stars, written for the ensemble, or Ola Gjeilo’s Ubi Caritas. I was particularly miffed at missing the latter, but they had loads in reserve to ensure an evening of wonderful unaccompanied singing.
From 16th Renaissance music to contemporary pop and swing, it would take even the most nit-picky, looking-for-a fault person to dare to criticise this performance. They set the ball rolling with an eight-part motet by de Victoria – distinctly sublime – but I felt they kept their best to the second half of the concert.
Introduced by the classic Swingles Singers’ “Bouree for Bach” (that took me back a few decades!), the Schubert Liebe and a remastered Beatles song, Free As A Bird, added a few notches to the quality, enhanced perhaps by Kate Rusby’s Underneath The Stars. This octet make multi-layered, multi-part singing seem straight-forward. It’s anything but as it needs cohesion, an unsteady rapport with your colleagues and intense musicality. Voces8 have all these qualities in abundance.
Then, they ditched the formal side of things and entered into the world of swing. Thus, one moment you’re delving into mediaeval polyphony the next you’re with Old Blue Eyes, and flying to the moon! We did hear some Bond music previously, that this was more relaxed but still with a musical rapport between eight singers that comes from intense practice and inherent musicianship.
Perth Festival is lucky on two counts. One – to be able to book such class acts like Voces8. Two – to have the luxury of St John’s Kirk as a venue for them to perform. Such is a match made in heaven.
