The Hallé was founded in Manchester by Sir Charles Hallé in 1858 and is now resident at the Bridgewater Hall. It ranks among the UK's top symphonic ensembles, with a distinguished history of acclaimed performances in this country and around the world; award-winning recordings, radio broadcasts and educational outreach programmes; and a visionary commitment to building audiences and developing orchestral repertoire.
Elena Urioste, recently selected as a BBC New Generation Artist and featured on the cover of Symphony magazine, has been hailed by critics and audiences alike for her lush tone, the nuanced lyricism of her playing, and her commanding stage presence. Since first appearing with the Philadelphia Orchestra at age thirteen, she has made acclaimed debuts with major orchestras. She has performed recitals in such distinguished venues as Wigmore Hall in London, Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, Konzerthaus Berlin, the Sage Gateshead in Newcastle, and the Mondavi Center at the University of California-Davis.
Jamie Phillips, Associate Conductor of the Hallé Orchestra and Los Angeles Philharmonic Dudamel Fellow, has already developed a strong guest-conducting profile. With a clear, expressive technique and innate musicality, he demonstrates a natural authority and confidence on the rostrum.
Engagements in the 2015/16 season include debut concerts with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Nash Ensemble, Residentie Orkest, Philharmonie Zuidnederland, Kammerakademie Potsdam and Västerås Sinfonietta.
In recent seasons, Phillips has conducted the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Manchester Camerata, Ulster Orchestra, RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, Camerata Salzburg, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra and Brussels Philharmonic. In 2015 Jamie Phillips also conducted the Hallé in subscription concerts at the Bridgewater Hall Manchester in a programme of Glinka, Beethoven and Rachmaninov.
He is also Music Director of the Hallé Youth Orchestra and is heavily involved in many of the Hallé’s education programmes and concerts.
“Phillips already has little to fear from comparison with most visiting conductors on the circuit. That he can persuade the Hallé to play with such affection, energy and swing is equal tribute to their professionalism and his gifts.” The Telegraph
